Sugarlands Valley, Great Smoky Mountains National Park (#AT0007)

An ancient range of mountains pushed up hundreds of millions of years ago when the old world continents of Africa and Europe "crashed" into the eastern face of North America.  Here the sun sets over the forested ridges of Sugarlands Valley, not far from where the Appalachian Trail crosses Newfound Gap Road. On our trek through the park, we have the opportunity to experience a number of forest communities, including cove hardwood with its great diversity of plant life; northern hardwood (beech, birch, maple, hemlock); and boreal forest (spruce-fir) at the highest elevations.
