Hummingbird, Gifford Pinchot National Forest, Washington (#WF0003)
Sometimes it just takes a little patience. While hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in the Goat Rocks Wilderness, I came upon a hummingbird feeding on a cluster of Indian Paintbrush. As soon as it sensed my presence it flew away. But it was lunchtime, so I attached a 300 mm lens to my camera and set up my tripod and - with cable release in hand - sat down and had lunch. Twenty minutes later this hummingbird appeared and hovered over the Indian paintbrush - just long enough for one shot - before it was gone. "Breathtaking" may be an overused term, but it aptly describes the Goat Rocks Wilderness section of the Pacific Crest Trail.
