Black bear cub snoozing in black cherry tree (#WF0015)

While wildlife photography requires a certain amount of luck, you can greatly enhance your luck by developing an understanding of the habits of the subject wild animals that you wish to photograph.  Develop your knowledge of the habits and habitats of wild animals and plants - where they live and what they live on.  Think about where a subject animal is likely to make its appearance and then frequent that place. For example, if you know that the very favorite food of bears in southern Appalachia are ripe black cherries - and that these ripen during the last week of August - you might consider positioning yourself at that time in a healthy grove of these trees.  I once counted seven bears in such a grove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
