Bison crossing the Madison River, Yellowstone National Park (#WF0010)

To come upon a herd of free-roaming bison crossing a wild river is not, these days, an everyday occurrence.  If it wasn’t for the creation of Yellowstone National Park during the nineteenth century, and a last ditch effort by American and Canadian conservationists at the turn of the century to save the few remaining bison, we would not have such an opportunity at all.   The image above involved the use of a 70-300 mm zoom telephoto lens.  It was shot with the zoom telephoto set at about 175 mm.  This allowed the inclusion of the bison herd, the Madison River, and the distant Gallatin Mountains.
