Virginia Pine Cones, Nolichucky Gorge, North Carolina (#AT0015)
Near Irwin, Tennessee, the trail drops down off the high ridges into Nolichucky Gorge where there is an outdoor center complete with hiker hostel. There I met three wild men from North Carolina who invited me along on a raft trip down the "Chucky." The white churning waters of the Nolichucky River carried us for miles beneath steep, densely forested slopes - ah, sweet wilderness, an afternoon of bliss! Mike, Bill and John, wherever you are, I hope you are well.
