Spence Field, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee (#AT0006)
For seventy-five miles the Appalachian Trail follows the crest of the Great Smoky Mountains through the national park. Open, grassy balds, such as Spence Field, provide great views into both North Carolina and Tennessee, as well as the opportunity to see deer and other wildlife. I spent a couple years once working as an interpretive naturalist in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and loved almost every minute of it. More than a third of the park is "old growth" forests, and the park is incredibly rich in terms of both natural beauty and ecological diversity. It truly is a photographer's paradise!
