San Bernadino Mountains, California (#PC0003)
The San Bernadino, San Gorgonio and Santa Monica Mountains are referred to as the Transverse Ranges because they go east-west, transverse to the north-south orientation of other North American ranges. These are the mountains that surround the Los Angeles Basin and the Pacific Crest Trail follows their crests for more than 200 miles. Above, the sun sets over the mountains and dry woods of the San Bernadino National Forest.
After dropping down off of the forested heights of the San Bernardino Mountains, be prepared for the longest stretch of low elevation desert hiking along the entire length of the Pacific Crest Trail. Hope you have plenty of water, for what lies ahead is the dry forty-mile jaunt across Antelope Valley. Once through the valley, you will begin the long ascent into the breathtaking world of the High Sierra.
