Whitetail Deer (#WF0014)
I know - it appears that I am over-preoccupied with whitetail deer. It’s true, I am. From my earliest memories, growing up in the town of Ware, Massachusetts - on trips with my parents or bicycle trips with friends, I would explore the wilderness next door. It is called the Quabbin Reservation and it is 80,000 acres of state-owned land and water that serves as the watershed for the largest reservoir that serves the city of Boston. The place is teaming with deer and other wildlife. The childhood thrill of briefly seeing these shy and graceful creatures that appear to so perfectly blend into the surrounding pine-hardwood forests has never left me. Sadly, the state has, in recent years opened the Quabbin to hunting, on the grounds that there are too many deer. I personally would rather see a few wolves and mountain lions released in the area.
