Mt. Rogers National Recreation Area, Virginia (#AT0016)

Mt. Rogers National recreation Area is located in southwestern Virginia.  It is surrounded by the 1.5 million-acre Jefferson National forest and contains the highest peaks in the state.  While the Appalachian Trail passes through fourteen states, Virginia has almost 25 percent (500 miles) of the trail.  The nearby village of Damascus has a hiker's hostel and celebrates Appalachian Trail Day each year in May, complete with thru-hiker's parade.
