Great Blue Heron in the Housatonic River, Housatonic, Massachusetts (#BK0006)

Here, a paper mill dam backs up a portion on the Housatonic River to form Rising Pond.  While the loosestrife seen above contains striking purple blossoms, ecologists will tell you that it is an "invasive, intrusive" - an exotic plant that has come from Eurasia and has been reducing biodiversity in local wetlands by pushing out a number of native plant species.
