Fontana Dam, North Carolina (#AT0004)
One hundred and sixty miles north of its southern terminus on Springer Mountain, the Appalachian Trail leaves the Nantahala National Forest to cross over the top of Fontana Dam and enter the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Nearby is the "Fontana Hilton," the largest of the trailside shelters, it can sleep more than thirty hikers. Three-sided shelters are located along the entire length of the trail, usually spaced six-to-twelve miles apart. Behind the dam is Fontana Lake, a narrow 22-mile long reservoir that snakes its way through the wild lands of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Nantahala National Forest .
