Church in Cades Cove, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee (#AT0010)
I once had the privilege of spending six months living and working in Cades Cove. At the time, the National Park Service was reintroducing red wolves into the area and almost every night I was serenaded by the howls of these beautiful and endangered animals. While gray wolves occupied the rest of North America, the historical range of the red wolf was the southeast. At one point there were only 23 red wolves remaining in the wild (and all of them in southwestern Louisiana).
