Hiker in the Chattahoochee National Forest, Georgia (#AT0001)

Our trek will start in Georgia.  In the image above, a thru-hiker is deep in the woods of the 750,000-acre Chattahoochee National Forest.  This majestic piece of public land sprawls across the mountains of northern Georgia and contains the first eighty-five miles of the Appalachian Trail.  In April the Chattahoochee is a magical place.  Thru-hikers have the opportunity to watch spring unfold, first with the blossoming of the wildflowers of the forest floor and then with the greening of the forest canopy.  The high ridges remain clothed in the browns and grays of late winter, long after the valleys below have been transformed into a tapestry of vernal greens.
