Black bear, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee (#WF0002)
Black bears, like white-tailed deer, have made a great comeback in much of the Appalachian region. It is hard to believe that during the nineteenth century, Henry David Thoreau had to travel to northern New Hampshire just to see a whitetail deer. In my home area, the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts, it is now common to see black bears, eastern coyotes, wild turkeys and even an occasional bald eagle - creatures that were seldom seen seen 30 years ago.
