View from Barren Mountain, Maine (#AT0026)
The last 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail - that segment from the village of Monson, Maine to the base of Mt. Katahdin - is called the "hundred-mile wilderness." It no longer is the "wilderness" that it must have been during the first decades of the trail's existence. The trail now crosses a number of roads that have been built by the forest products industry. Still, there is a wild feel to the land as you skirt many remote lakes and follow the crest of ridges such as Barren Mountain.
